The Digital Divide

January 20, 2009

The Myth of the Digital Native‏ -this entry first appeared in Betchablog.

In it, Chris Betcher debunks the myth behind the notion of Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants by Marc Prensky. There seemed to be quite a bit of discussion on this, with some rather interesting rebuttals to Prensky’s ideas, both in Betcher’s entry and others in the Internet.

Times Online has an article, How the Google generation think differently, which I think gives a good idea of how teenagers, the so-called “Digital Natives” according to Prensky, work in this digital age. It reminds me of my nephew and I remember thinking I should forward the article to my sis to let her know that she’s not alone. In a way, I think the digital divide is very much a generation (age) gap as well, so I kinda agree with Prensky. It’s to do with being comfortable with using technology, which my nephew, all of 10, is and my sis isn’t. But of course, that doesn’t mean I don’t agree with Betcher and all those Prensky-detractors. I guess I’ll just sit on the fence for a while.
